Automation Solutions for the Electronics Industry

Writer: CobotKindCobotKind

Manufacturers in the highly competitive electronics industry have to keep up with consumer preferences and trends, as well a rapid technological advancements. Other challenges include rising production costs and quality control issues that can lead to factory downtime. As a result, electronics manufacturers have to invest in reliable automation to improve productivity and efficiency, whilst maintaining consistent product quality and meeting safety standards. Due to changing production needs, it is beneficial if robotic solutions can be easily re-deployed to different tasks as required - flexibility is a must.

FlexiBowl® Flexible Part Feeding

Electronics manufacturing often involves tiny components, making precise positioning and handling during feeding a daunting task. This is no problem for FlexiBowl®, which can handle entire families of parts, with part sizes between 1-300 mm and 1-300 g across the range. Regardless of geometry or material, FlexiBowl® can position and feed parts accurately and efficiently for picking.

Moreover, a wide range of different components are often required for electronics manufacturing, each with unique feeding and handling requirements in the parts feeding system. FlexiBowl® has the ability to handle various shapes and sizes of items, removing the need for customised feeders for each part. Typically, FlexiBowl® can be used to feed components such as relays, switches, batteries, microchips, LEDs, sensors and connectors.

End-of-Arm-Safeguard (EOAS)

The recently-launched End-of-Arm-Safeguard from SICK is ideal for industries where human workers are required to operate in close proximity to collaborative robots, which is common in electronics assembly. Thanks to contactless technology, the EOAS creates a protective field around the robot's end-of-arm tooling and will cause the robot to stop before a collision occurs. The solution is designed specifically for the e-Series from Universal Robots.

Whilst improving worker safety, the End-of-Arm-Safeguard also enables higher robot speeds in many collaborative applications. The solution also optimises the use of space and increases the operating efficiency.

aiPRESS Electric Servo Press

aiPRESS electric servo presses are used for high-precision joining and forming applications. With a force capacity of up to 100 kN, the range allows for programmable force and position control, ensuring that components are pressed to the exact force and depth needed. The aiPRESS can be integrated into existing systems or used as a stand-alone unit.

In electronics manufacturing, the aiPRESS enables precise assembly applications such as pressing circuit boards into housings, ensuring accurate force application and positioning, thus reducing the risk of damage whilst also optimising processes for efficiency and quality.

aiQ-CONTROL, the aiPRESS quality control software, enables complete monitoring and data capture of press-fit or joining processes. The data is exported as a CSV file for quality control purposes.

The aiPRESS is also equipped with aiLIGHT: a 4-colour LED light which signals when the servo press is ready to be loaded (white) or the process is taking place (blue), as well as if the desired result has been achieved (green) or if there has been deviation from the specifications (red). This prevents products that do not meet the required pressing standards from continuing in the production line.
